Grace Tame, former Australian of the Year and prominent advocate for sexual abuse survivors, gave evidence at Hobart Magistrates Court regarding her childhood abuser, Nicolaas Ockert Bester, who allegedly made threatening social media posts directed at her in 2022. Bester posted three tweets referencing her school email address with what appeared to be cryptic countdowns to the release of Ms Tame's book, which she interpreted as signals of intent to cause her harm. The case represents a troubling example of persistent harassment directed at a public figure by the person who abused her as a teenager.

The tweets, made from the account NicoBester3, contained references to "10 weeks to go" and "4 weeks to go" alongside mentions of her childhood email address—the same address Bester had used to communicate with her whilst grooming her in 2010 when she was 15 years old. Ms Tame testified that she feared Bester intended to publicly release sexually explicit messages from the abuse period and became so distressed that she significantly increased security for her book tour, experiencing what she described as close to "rock bottom" psychologically. A 2022 police raid discovered a folder named "wraak" (Afrikaans for revenge) on Bester's portable devices containing pictures and videos of Ms Tame, as well as evidence of a 2017 email containing alleged Facebook messages from the abuse period. Bester, 74, has previous convictions including two years and ten months imprisonment in 2011 for the abuse and possession of child exploitation material, and four months in 2016 for producing child exploitation material; though deemed unfit to stand trial due to dementia, he is attending the special hearing via video link.
