## Key points

- Greenland’s parliament backed the security agreement by 16 votes to none.
- Denmark’s parliamentary approval is still required.
- Some residents question whether Greenlanders will benefit.

## Summary

Greenland’s parliament has approved a security agreement with the United States and Denmark, advancing a plan to strengthen security in the Arctic and North Atlantic after months of tension over President Donald Trump’s calls for US control of the island. The deal would allow a larger US military presence while Greenland remains under Danish control.

Lawmakers in Nuuk voted 16-0, with seven abstentions. The agreement was signed in September and will take effect only after Denmark completes its parliamentary process; it would also apply if Greenland later chose independence. It calls for contracts linked to US bases to go to Greenlandic suppliers as far as possible, though some residents say they remain worried and doubt the deal will benefit local people.
