## Key points

- Greenland’s parliament ratified the security agreement.
- The deal could allow two new US bases.
- Denmark’s parliament must still approve it.

## Summary

The new development is that Greenland’s parliament has ratified a trilateral security and military-access agreement with the United States and Denmark. The vote clears a key step towards expanding the US military presence on the strategically placed Arctic island, after President Donald Trump’s threats to take control of Greenland strained relations with Denmark and other European allies.

The agreement allows for two new US bases and the proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system, while keeping Greenland under Danish control and reaffirming Greenlanders’ right to self-determination. Foreign Minister Mute Egede said peace and stability could no longer be taken for granted; Naleraq party leader Pele Broberg said Greenland would gain no economic benefit. The deal still requires Danish parliamentary approval, with a vote scheduled for 19 November.
