A new documentary, *Gregg Allman: The Music of My Soul*, directed by James Keach and made in association with Rolling Stone Films, tells the story of the Allman Brothers Band through the perspective of frontman Gregg Allman, who died in 2017. Released digitally from 21 July 2026, it draws on previously unseen archival interviews with Allman, including a candid 2014 conversation, alongside new interviews with his children, former wives, fellow musicians and surviving original drummer Jaimoe, reframing the band's often tragic history as one of survival and perseverance.

Rolling Stone highlights several revelations from the film, including that Allman and his brother Duane were sent to military school as children after their father was murdered and their mother had to live on a college campus, and that seeing Otis Redding and Jackie Wilson perform in Nashville reshaped their musical direction towards R&B and blues. The documentary also reveals that Duane based the band's distinctive dual-drummer lineup on Redding's and James Brown's bands, and that promoter Bill Graham was an early and influential champion of the group.
