## Key points

- Gerwig says she will never direct herself.
- She prefers to act for other filmmakers.
- Her next film is due in February 2027.

## Summary

Greta Gerwig has said she will not direct herself, explaining that doing so would make her “go crazy”. The article presents this as a deliberate boundary in her career: she prefers to direct from behind the camera and act in films made by other directors.

Gerwig began in low-budget independent cinema, acting in mumblecore films and co-directing *Nights and Weekends* in 2008 before making her solo directorial debut with *Lady Bird*. Her 2023 film *Barbie* grossed more than $1 billion, making her the first woman to reach that box-office milestone as a solo filmmaker. She has acted in films by directors including Noah Baumbach, Mike Mills and Pablo Larraín, and is set to direct *Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew*, due in cinemas in February 2027.
