Guns of Eschaton is a forthcoming first-person shooter that reworks soulslike conventions into an apocalyptic Weird West setting, making familiar melee-focused skills far less useful. Its demanding combat, ranged enemies and unforgiving death penalties aim to challenge even experienced soulslike players, while retaining features such as levelling currency, checkpoints and co-operative play.

In a two-hour gamescom demo, IGN’s reviewer used an authentic-style 19th-century six-shot revolver that requires manually cocking the hammer, ejecting cartridges individually and reloading slowly. Players can arrange specialised ammunition in the cylinder, including armour-piercing and cursed rounds, and must often kill enemies through prescribed shot sequences revealed in an in-game book—for example, targeting particular limbs before the head. The reviewer found the system potentially inventive but was uncertain whether its complexity might become excessive.

  • Manual revolver handling makes every reload risky
  • Enemy-specific shot sequences reward precision
