English gymnast Gabriel Langton has been cleared of serious injury after falling head first from the horizontal bar during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The incident halted competition and underlined the risks involved in elite gymnastics, but scans produced very positive results and he is expected to leave hospital on Saturday evening.

The 19-year-old fell from about three metres after missing a catch in the final rotation of the men’s team event, having competed on floor, rings and parallel bars. England went on to win silver behind Canada, though Langton has not yet received his medal; he has not qualified for further events and had been a late replacement for injured Olympic champion Max Whitlock.
