## Key points

- Jeffries says he will vote to impeach Hegseth.
- Massie plans a vote on eight impeachment articles.
- Expected Republican defections could help the resolution pass.

## Summary

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he would vote to impeach Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, accusing him of abusing his power and helping engineer the “reckless and costly” war in Iran. A resolution brought by Republican Thomas Massie could now have a stronger chance of passing, as party leaders expect defections among Republicans who lost their seats.

Massie plans to seek a vote on eight articles of impeachment when the House returns this week. Jeffries said Democrats would discuss the resolution at their Tuesday caucus meeting; he is expected to become House Speaker in January. President Donald Trump has backed Hegseth, while an unnamed adviser described the secretary as being “on thin ice”; Hegseth has called the articles a sham.
