## Key points

- Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress.
- Jeffries expects at least 255 House seats for his party.
- He pledged to focus on affordability and accountability.

## Summary

Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries says his party will make affordability its priority after a sweeping US midterm victory gave Democrats control of both chambers of Congress. He described the result as an “American tsunami” and said voters wanted a change in direction.

Jeffries expects Democrats to win at least 255 House seats once counting is complete, and is set to become the first Black Speaker of the House in January. The party campaigned on reducing the costs of groceries, petrol, housing and healthcare, but President Donald Trump’s veto threats could limit what legislation it can pass. Jeffries also pledged to investigate alleged wrongdoing by the administration, while saying Democrats should focus on governing rather than revenge.
