## Key points

- Jeffries backs impeaching Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
- Massie plans to revive an eight-article impeachment resolution.
- Trump supports Hegseth, who calls the effort political.

## Summary

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries says he strongly supports impeaching Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, accusing him of abusing his power and mishandling the Iran war. The move could lead to a House vote within days and adds to pressure on Hegseth as Democrats prepare wider scrutiny of his leadership.

Republican congressman Thomas Massie plans to reintroduce an impeachment resolution as soon as Monday. It contains eight articles, including an allegation that Hegseth violated the 1973 War Powers Resolution; Jeffries expects strong Democratic support, with members due to discuss it on Tuesday. President Donald Trump continues to back Hegseth, who has dismissed the effort as politically motivated, while Democrats also plan to examine his handling of the Pentagon, Ukraine policy and military strikes on alleged drug-trafficking boats.
