## Summary

Taylor Swift’s self-titled debut album was released 20 years ago, on 24 October 2006. To mark the anniversary, a journalist has published a previously unpublished, largely unabridged interview from January 2008, offering a glimpse of Swift’s early career and her thoughts on the songs.

At the time, Swift was gaining attention mainly in country music, while MTV was beginning to test a pop remix of “Teardrops on My Guitar”. The interviewer recalls that only one person asked for an autograph during their hour-plus conversation at an In-N-Out near Universal City; the article also notes the album’s later influence on expectations for confessional pop songwriting.
