Hard parties, cheap rents and horrible flats: how 90s art and fashion redefined British culture

The Guardian · 1 week ago

A new Tate Britain exhibition, *The 90s: Art and Fashion*, captures how Britain’s creative culture was reshaped by art, fashion, music and nightlife. Curated by Edward Enninful, it portrays a youthful generation of artists, photographers, models and writers who moved from the margins towards the mainstream, often while still poor, ambitious and experimental.

The exhibition features figures including Kate Moss, Sarah Lucas and Alexander McQueen, alongside images of ravers, parties and unconventional fashion shoots. The era was marked by abundant, inexpensive nightlife in warehouses, empty lidos and other inner-city spaces, though fashion parties also exposed darker power dynamics; many of these venues have since become expensive flats, while the culture itself has grown far more visually documented.
