New footage from HBO Max’s forthcoming DC series Lanterns was shown at San Diego Comic-Con, introducing the dynamic between veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and recruit John Stewart. The clips suggest the series will combine comic banter, an Earth-based murder mystery and a threat linked to the Manhunters, while establishing John’s first experiences using his power ring.

Kyle Chandler’s Hal tests Aaron Pierre’s John by throwing him the ring as their car goes over a cliff, leading John to create “bubble wrap” to survive. Another scene has Hal identify an alien suspect through gaps in his knowledge of Harry Potter and Barack Obama, before containing a potential explosion at a police station; a further flashback depicts John’s former life as a Marine sniper sent on a mission after three teams lost contact.
