## Summary

Paapa Essiedu has responded to criticism of his casting as Severus Snape in the forthcoming Harry Potter television series, amid debate over author J.K. Rowling’s views on transgender rights. Essiedu said people have strong feelings about the issue, but that his focus is on portraying the character with humanity and complexity.

Essiedu previously signed a letter urging the UK film and television industry to support trans rights after the Supreme Court ruled on the legal definition of a woman. Rowling said she could not dismiss him from the series and would not do so over legally protected beliefs. The show, which began filming in the UK last summer, is due to premiere on Christmas Day and also stars Dominic McLaughlin, John Lithgow and Bel Powley.
