HBO Nabs Comedy ‘Alan Opts Out’ From Emily Kapnek & Bill Lawrence
HBO has acquired for development Alan Opts Out, a half-hour comedy from writer Emily Kapnek, producer Bill Lawrence’s Doozer and Warner Bros. Television. The project extends HBO’s relationship with Lawrence following the early success of Rooster, and reflects continuing demand for established television creators and literary adaptations.
Based on Courtney Maum’s novel published last month, the comedy follows advertising executive Alan Anderson after he loses a major client and retreats to living off his suburban Connecticut garden. Kapnek will write, executive produce and serve as showrunner; Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, Liza Katzer and Maum will also executive produce, with Warner Bros. Television producing. Lawrence’s Doozer has several series across HBO, Apple TV, ABC and Netflix, while Kapnek previously created Suburgatory, Selfie and Splitting Up Together.
