HBO has released the first full trailer for its highly anticipated Harry Potter television series, offering a bolder showcase of the show's world rather than simply retreading the familiar film version. Where March's teaser leaned on nostalgia, this trailer reveals previously unseen characters, expanded Hogwarts locations and a new score from Hans Zimmer, underlining the series' ambition to feel distinct from Warner Bros' original film franchise.

Season one's logline follows Harry's discovery that he is a wizard and his arrival at Hogwarts, where he must confront "the darkest wizard of all" amid the school's hidden secrets. The trailer also confirms a sprawling cast, led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron, alongside John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Janet McTeer as McGonagall and Nick Frost as Hagrid, with dozens more actors named across the Weasley family and all four Hogwarts houses.

Harry Potter has previously been adapted only as feature films, but HBO is now producing a new television series retelling the story in longer form, allowing more detail from J.K. Rowling's novels to make it to screen. A newly released trailer gives the clearest look yet at the show, including its cast and setting, ahead of its debut.

The series follows the same basic story as the books and films: a boy named Harry discovers he is a wizard and is sent to Hogwarts, a school for young witches and wizards, where he must eventually face a powerful dark wizard. The lead roles are played by a new set of actors, including Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron, supported by established actors such as John Lithgow, Paapa Essiedu, Janet McTeer and Nick Frost in adult roles.

The project matters because it is a major test of whether a well-known story can be successfully retold for a new generation on television, distinct from the original Warner Bros films that many viewers already know well. Its scale, cast and production choices are being closely watched as indicators of how the show will differ from, or compare to, its cinematic predecessor.
