## Key points

- *Hacks* pairs comedian Deborah Vance with writer Ava Daniels.
- Their strained partnership gains depth across the series.
- Its final season received a record 24 Emmy nominations.

## Summary

*Hacks* follows veteran Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance and young writer Ava Daniels, whose uneasy professional partnership develops into a layered story about ambition, ageing and self-sabotage. The article argues that the comedy rewards rewatching because its sharp jokes sit alongside emotional groundwork that gives earlier scenes new meaning.

Jean Smart plays Deborah, who fears being pushed aside, while Hannah Einbinder’s Ava seeks success but often undermines herself. Their relationship avoids a quick, conventional odd-couple transformation, allowing them to hurt and challenge each other over time. The article says the show’s fifth and final season received 24 Emmy nominations, a record for a comedy series in a single season.
