Air Vice-Marshal Jamie Thompson, head of UK Space Command, has been suspended while police investigate allegations of a serious sexual offence involving an adult and theft. The allegations emerged just two months after his appointment and as the Government promotes Britain’s expanding military role in space.

Thompson, who earns more than £110,000 annually, previously served as UK Space Command’s deputy commander and held senior Ministry of Defence and military appointments. The theft investigation has been referred to the Service Prosecuting Authority, which will decide whether charges should be brought; the sexual-offence investigation remains ongoing. Air Commodore Darren Whiteley has been appointed interim commander.
