U2 have released their cover of the Pogues’ 1988 song ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah’ ahead of a Shane MacGowan tribute album, 20th Century Paddy – The Songs of Shane MacGowan. The recording honours the late Pogues frontman’s songwriting and is part of a wider project featuring major artists, underlining MacGowan’s enduring influence across folk, punk and rock.

The tribute album is due on 13 November and also includes Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, the Libertines, Dropkick Murphys and David Gray; Springsteen previously shared his version of ‘A Rainy Night In Soho’ in March. U2’s The Edge praised MacGowan’s ability to combine folk tradition, political memory, dark humour and romance, while the band continue preparations for their first new studio album since 2017 and approach their 50th anniversary on 25 September.
