Sydney mourns police constable Mia Lay after fatal patrol car crash
Hundreds of mourners gathered at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Sydney to farewell Constable Mia Lay, a 20-year-old officer killed while on duty. Her funeral honoured her brief policing career and the loss felt by her family, partner and colleagues.
Lay had been with NSW Police for 16 months when her patrol car crashed into a tree in Redfern on 25 September. Her partner, Daniel Vasquez, said they had gone ring shopping and he planned to propose on a holiday in Fiji; her father and the police commissioner also paid tribute, and she was awarded two medals posthumously.
