Heavily pregnant woman is ‘refused emergency accommodation by council’ which houses more than 3,500 migrants – as charity that stepped in says it was told ‘unborn children have no rights’

Daily Mail ·

A heavily pregnant woman seeking refuge from domestic abuse was allegedly refused emergency accommodation by Glasgow City Council and spent the night in a homeless shelter. The Homeless Project Scotland charity reported that during the council interaction, officials allegedly told charity staff that "unborn children have no rights," sparking criticism over the city's handling of vulnerable pregnant women in crisis.

The 26-year-old arrived at the charity's Glasgow base on Tuesday after travelling from London fleeing an abusive relationship. Glasgow has 7,711 homeless adults and 2,931 children, whilst 3,683 migrants are receiving housing support in the city. The charity's CEO Colin McInnes criticised the council's response and called for Prime Minister Andy Burnham to intervene, though the council stated it is reviewing the case and providing appropriate support.
