## Key points

- Hegseth vowed to fight impeachment efforts.
- Trump praised his Pentagon chief.
- Vance linked the Iran war to Republican election losses.

## Summary

Pete Hegseth has vowed to resist efforts to impeach him and defended the US war with Iran, after Republicans lost control of Congress in midterm elections. His remarks come as Democrats prepare investigations into his leadership of the Pentagon and some Republicans question the war’s political cost.

In a video message, Hegseth called impeachment a “sham” and cited his dismissal of senior military leaders and the end of diversity initiatives as evidence of his record. President Donald Trump praised him, while Vice-President JD Vance said the Iran war cost Republicans control of Congress. Representative Thomas Massie plans to reintroduce impeachment articles next week, and Hegseth urged lawmakers to approve funding for the war and other Pentagon priorities.
