Britain’s Charlotte Henshaw won her 12th Para-canoe world title just 11 days after being hospitalised with cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection affecting her leg. The victory in Poznan, Poland, was particularly significant because illness prevented her from training on the water before the championships and she had doubted she would be able to compete.

The 39-year-old double leg amputee won the KL2 200m final by more than three seconds, securing her eighth world title in that event alongside four VL3 titles. Henshaw, a three-time Paralympic champion who switched from swimming to Para-canoeing in 2017, said experience helped her retain the title; team-mates Hope Gordon and Stuart Wood also won gold and bronze respectively.
