Anthropic has rolled out an Import Memory feature for Claude that lets users switching from ChatGPT or Google Gemini bring over saved context from those chatbots, removing one of the main barriers to switching AI assistants. This matters because saved memory (preferences, past conversations and context) is often what keeps people tied to a particular chatbot, so an easy transfer tool lowers the switching cost for users tempted to move by Claude's coding abilities or concerns such as OpenAI's Department of Defense contract.

The process involves enabling memory in both apps: in Claude, users go to Settings > Memory (or Settings > Capabilities), turn on "Generate Memories from chats" and start the import to get a prompt to copy. That prompt is pasted into ChatGPT (with its own memory enabled, and optionally using Thinking mode for a fuller summary) to generate a text summary, which is then copied back into Claude's import field. The same method works with Gemini via its Personal Intelligence memory settings. Anthropic says the import can take up to 24 hours to complete, after which users can review what Claude has retained under its memory settings.
