Daily Mail · 3 hours ago

A Minnesota mother, Bonnie Pierce, has died after running back into her burning home to save her four-year-old daughter, shielding the child with her own body until firefighters arrived. Pierce, 38, initially escaped the fire that broke out at a duplex in Saint Paul but returned inside, and was found unresponsive in a bedroom with her daughter Grace sheltered beneath her. She died on 24 August, two days after the blaze, having suffered burns to 48% of her body and prolonged oxygen deprivation.

Fire officials said crews faced extreme conditions and near-zero visibility during the rescue. Grace survived but remains in critical condition, while another of Pierce's daughters escaped separately by climbing out of a window. Pierce, a mother of four, is survived by her daughters and a grandson; a GoFundMe appeal has raised almost $80,000 for the family, and tributes have poured in online praising her sacrifice. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
