A 60-year-old California musician, Geordan White, drowned in Shasta Lake on Friday after jumping into the water to rescue his pet shih tzu, Benji, when the dog fell overboard from his boat. White suffered what police described as an "unknown emergency" while in the water and was unable to stay afloat even after a bystander threw him a flotation device, losing his grip and sinking before help could reach him. His death highlights the risks of entering open water to save a pet, prompting local authorities to renew safety warnings.

An onlooker managed to pull Benji from the water, while police divers later recovered White's body from the lake bed; an autopsy is expected to determine the cause of death. White, who had been married to his wife Darlene for 26 years, was well known in the local music scene and often posted about Benji on Facebook, describing the dog as his "best friend ever." Friends paid tribute to him online, and the Shasta County Sheriff's Office offered condolences while urging the public to always wear personal flotation devices on the water.
