Welsh runner Jake Heyward has completed a remarkable recovery from double Achilles surgery, returning to competitive athletics in time to represent Wales in the mile event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The 27-year-old, who won 1,500m silver at the 2022 European Championships, spent nearly two years sidelined after an ongoing foot problem required two separate operations, with most athletes never returning to the sport after even one such procedure. His comeback is notable both for its speed and for the toll injuries and pain had previously taken on his career, including during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Heyward only resumed running in January 2026 after 20 months out, starting with "couch to 5km"-style training before rapidly building fitness. This past weekend he set a new Welsh one-mile record of three minutes 46.73 seconds at the London Diamond League, adding to the Welsh 1,500m record he already holds. He will now compete in the Commonwealth Mile in Glasgow, a event last run at the 1966 Games and reintroduced as a tribute to the 1954 "Miracle Mile", while now coaching himself after previously working with Mark Rowland.
