## Key points

- Clinton says independent candidates could undermine Democratic midterm efforts.
- McConaughey argues a few independent lawmakers could shift power.
- A strategist says the Clintons may mainly reach Democratic supporters.

## Summary

Hillary Clinton criticised Matthew McConaughey for urging voters to consider independent candidates, saying his message could weaken Democratic efforts in the approaching midterm elections. She argued that electing Democrats was necessary to prevent Donald Trump from having two more years without effective checks on his power.

McConaughey’s social media video questioned the idea that votes for independents are wasted, suggesting a small number of independent lawmakers could shift power in Washington. Journalist Kara Swisher showed the video to Clinton on their podcast and said it did not clearly explain the appeal of independents. Clinton and Bill Clinton have been campaigning for Democratic candidates, though strategist Mally Smith said their influence is likely to be strongest among the party’s base and politically engaged voters.
