## Key points

- Wong receives a 10-year sentence in his second national security case.
- The charge concerned alleged lobbying for sanctions against Hong Kong and China.
- He has spent almost six years in prison and had expected release in January.

## Summary

A Hong Kong court has sentenced democracy activist Joshua Wong to 10 years in prison for colluding with foreign powers, adding a new term to the time he is already serving. Rights groups say the charge was intended to keep him incarcerated, while a China scholar said the sentence signals Beijing’s continued control over Hong Kong.

Authorities accused Wong of lobbying other countries to impose sanctions on Hong Kong and China, including through efforts supporting a US human rights bill. He has spent almost six years behind bars and had been expected to be released in January after serving four years and eight months for subversion. Wong is the only person from that national security trial cohort to face a second charge under the law.
