An Ohio woman, Sharon Jacks, is suing a surgeon and several healthcare organisations after a lawsuit alleged that surgeons amputated her healthy left leg instead of her cancer-affected right leg in September 2025. The complaint says the error left her a double amputee and describes the incident as a serious failure of basic patient-safety procedures.

Jacks’s lawyer alleges that the right leg had been marked before surgery, and that the mark remained there even after the left leg was removed. The lawsuit seeks damages for physical injury, permanent disability, pain, emotional distress and related losses. Selby General Hospital said expected operating-room procedures were not followed and that the staff involved are no longer in their positions; it expressed sympathy for Jacks and her family.
