## Key points

- Belinda Fontanez defeated incumbent Matthew Bianchini in Pemberton Township.
- Bianchini’s loss came weeks after a confrontation at a public meeting.
- He apologised for threatening resident Michael Sawka.

## Summary

New Jersey’s Pemberton Township Mayor Matthew Bianchini has lost his re-election bid, weeks after a public meeting confrontation in which he charged towards resident Michael Sawka and threatened him. Democrat Belinda Fontanez won the contest, while Bianchini conceded and congratulated her, saying he supported a smooth transition.

Fontanez received nearly 60 per cent of the vote, compared with less than 30 per cent for Bianchini. Video showed several people restraining the mayor; he later apologised for his threats but said he had “snapped” after alleging that Sawka had made rude comments about his family. Sawka denied making those comments and called for Bianchini to resign and face charges.
