## Key points

- Marie Gluesenkamp Perez won a third House term.
- Her district backed Trump by about three points in 2024.
- Her breaks with party leaders may shape future votes.

## Summary

Marie Gluesenkamp Perez won a third term representing Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, defeating Republican state senator John Braun in a closely watched race. Her victory helps Democrats in their effort to regain control of the House, while her willingness to break with party leaders could complicate their efforts to maintain unity on future votes.

The district, which includes rural areas, Vancouver and coastal towns, was carried by Donald Trump by about three percentage points in 2024. Perez drew criticism from fellow Democrats after joining Republicans on two procedural votes in September; House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called one move a “breach of trust”. Braun, a former Navy captain and businessman, was seen as a more mainstream challenger, and more than $20 million was spent on the contest.
