How a Sweet, Horny Hockey Show Rewrote the Rules of Independent TV

The Hollywood Reporter · 2 hours ago

Accent Aigu Entertainment, the Canadian production company founded by Jacob Tierney and Brendan Brady, has become an unlikely model for the TV industry with its 2026 breakout hit "Heated Rivalry," a queer hockey romance built on a shoestring budget and a devoted BookTok following. The pair, who previously worked together on the cult comedy "Letterkenny" and its spin-off "Shoresy," left in 2023 to launch their own company with the aim of making fast, cheap, independent television without compromising on creative quality, offering a possible answer to how premium scripted TV can still get made now that major streamers are less willing to fund it generously.

Their approach, honed on Letterkenny's notoriously tight shoots (six episodes filmed in just 18 days), relies on scripts built around long, static scenes shot in single continuous takes, which are technically demanding but faster and more cinematic than conventional multi-camera coverage. Unlike standard TV production, which rotates several directors across a season, Accent Aigu commits to one or two directors throughout, allowing them to shoot location-by-location like an independent film rather than in repeated location blocks, cutting costs and scheduling strain, particularly valuable given Canada's constrained production budgets.
