## Key points

- Rice has five Premier League assists this season.
- Arteta has urged him to contribute more in attack.
- Arsenal are discussing a long-term contract.

## Summary

Declan Rice has made an outstanding start to the season as Arsenal have moved to the top of the Premier League, and Mikel Arteta says he expects even more from the midfielder. A changed role has encouraged Rice to contribute further up the pitch, helping make Arsenal’s midfield harder for opponents to defend against.

Rice has five league assists, more than any other player, all from open play, and has scored or assisted 55 goals since joining Arsenal in 2023. He has played across midfield but says his current position suits him best; greater rotation and rest, including EFL Cup games, have helped manage his workload. Arsenal have also held talks about a new contract, with Arteta saying Rice wants to stay long term.
