Narinder Kaur, a 54-year-old broadcaster with 80,000 followers, discovered sexually explicit deepfake images of herself circulating online after someone used a nudification app to remove clothing from her photos. This form of abuse has become widespread, with other high-profile women including former MP Nadine Dorries, newsreader Cathy Newman and Dame Penny Mordaunt also falling victim. The deepfakes are frequently used as a weapon to shame, demean and silence women who speak out publicly, though victims across all demographics face this harassment. In February 2025, the UK made creating or requesting deepfake intimate images without consent a specific criminal offence under Section 138 of the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025.

According to recent polling, 7 per cent of UK respondents reported being depicted in sexual deepfakes without consent, whilst 18 per cent of UK women have experienced image-based sexual abuse more broadly. Disturbingly, 96 per cent of artificially generated intimate material online is sexually explicit, with 99 per cent depicting women. The crime remains significantly underreported due to victim shame and stigma. A recent arrest saw a 36-year-old man detained with thousands of AI-generated images and videos on his electronic devices, featuring not only Dorries but also at least three other female politicians and several celebrities.
