## Key points

- Democrats secured a major House victory.
- Seven Republican-held Senate seats flipped.
- The reported House swing was 14.7 points.

## Summary

Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the midterms, with a broad shift towards their party across the country. The result marks a major setback for President Donald Trump and his party, and could reshape the legislative agenda.

By Friday, Democrats had won 253 House seats, well above the 218 needed, with 25 races still too close to call. They also flipped seven Republican-held Senate seats, despite needing four for control; the article says the Senate outcome remained uncertain. The reported 14.7-point swing towards Democrats was the largest since the 2010 midterms, and further Senate contests in Mississippi and Alaska had not been called.
