Daniel Kinahan, the alleged head of the notorious Kinahan cartel, appeared before Dublin's non-jury Special Criminal Court on Sunday after being extradited from Dubai, where he was arrested in April. He has been charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation between October 2015 and April 2017, marking a significant development in efforts to bring the reputed crime boss to justice after years of international pursuit.

The 49-year-old was remanded in custody following the hearing, telling the court "I think we all know I won't be getting bail." According to the UK's National Crime Agency, the Kinahan cartel has trafficked tonnes of drugs and firearms globally for more than two decades.
