A large fire broke out at a workshop and scaffolding yard near Carshalton Road in Mitcham, south London, prompting a major emergency response. Thick smoke was visible across a wide area, and residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed while the public was urged to avoid the area; train services through Mitcham Junction were also disrupted.

Around 125 firefighters and 20 fire engines attended after London Fire Brigade received more than 70 calls from 4.27pm. Crews used a 32-metre turntable ladder to tackle the blaze from above, with teams deployed from Mitcham, Wallington, Norbury and nearby stations; the cause had not yet been established and no injuries were reported.
