## Key points

- *The Death of Robin Hood* is HBO Max’s top film.
- It reached number one within a week of debuting.
- The film’s brutal take on the legend has divided viewers.

## Summary

Hugh Jackman’s dark retelling of Robin Hood, *The Death of Robin Hood*, has reached the top of HBO Max’s film chart a week after its streaming debut, according to FlixPatrol. The success contrasts with its mixed reviews and weak cinema performance, showing how the film has found a larger audience on streaming.

Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, the film stars Jackman as a wounded Robin confronting his violent past, alongside Jodie Comer as Sister Brigid. Its grim opening, including Robin killing a child, helps explain the divided response, while Jackman’s portrayal of a man reckoning with his actions provides an emotional centre. The ending also explores how a story can be reshaped to help a child understand her world.
