World number two Luke Humphries suffered a shock first-round exit from the World Matchplay darts, losing 10-7 to unseeded Scotsman Cameron Menzies. It is a major upset given Humphries' recent form, having beaten Luke Littler to win the US Darts Masters in June, and marks the second successive year the former world champion has fallen at the first hurdle in this event.

Humphries lost his first six legs before finally holding throw, and although he rallied with four consecutive legs to level at 8-7, Menzies sealed victory in style with a 170 checkout. Menzies, ranked 27th in the world, becomes one of only three unseeded players to reach the second round, where he will face 15th seed Ross Smith. Elsewhere, seventh seed Gerwyn Price recovered from 6-2 down to beat Germany's Martin Schindler 11-9, and will meet former world champion Rob Cross, who thrashed Danny Noppert 10-3, in round two.
