## Key points

- Viral posts drew hundreds to a housing event.
- Only about 300 pre-enrolled people were eligible.
- Attendees needed to bring their case managers.

## Summary

Hundreds of Angelenos went to the Mayfair Hotel after social media posts suggested they might secure free housing, but the event was not open to the public. The misunderstanding highlights how missing eligibility details can create false hope for people facing homelessness.

The opportunity was limited to about 300 people already enrolled in the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s Housing Navigation programme, who had to attend with their assigned case managers. Posts highlighted the chance of being approved on the spot but did not clearly explain those requirements. The city bought the hotel in 2023 as part of its homelessness initiative.
