Nottingham Forest have signed Chelsea striker Liam Delap for a club-record £45m, giving the 23-year-old a five-year contract. The move matters because Forest’s new manager, Oliver Glasner, identified Delap as a priority and will hope he can strengthen the side’s goalscoring options.

Delap joins his third club in three seasons after being told he was not in Xabi Alonso’s plans at Chelsea, where he had trained separately and lost the No 9 shirt to João Pedro. Chelsea make a £15m profit after buying him from Ipswich for £30m a year ago; he scored twice in all competitions for the club and could debut against Liverpool on Saturday.
