‘I could have put a deposit on a house or do this crazy experiment’: the British musician playing 365 gigs this year

The Guardian · 4 hours ago

Isaac Neilson, a 26-year-old singer-songwriter from Derby, is attempting to perform a live gig every single day throughout 2026, a self-devised challenge intended to force his way into an industry he sees as blocked by nepotism and hidden barriers for independent, working-class artists. By the 231st day of the year, reached with a show in Oxford, the effort had already taken him more than 20,000 miles around the country and consumed the bulk of his life savings, a sacrifice he weighs against the alternative of putting a deposit on a house.

He has so far played in more than 60 UK towns and cities, including 28 shows in Derby, ranging from a 500-strong crowd supporting Cast in Barnsley to empty rooms during the World Cup, and reckons he is on track for over 400 performances by year's end. He began 2026 with just over £30,000 in savings and expects to finish with roughly £3,000, spending about £400 a week, largely on fuel, while relying on friends' sofas to cut costs; his only rules are that he must play daily and never busk. The project also doubles as a statement for Britain's struggling grassroots music scene, coming after the axing of the BBC Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds sparked criticism that the industry favours famous names' children over untapped talent.
