Islam Makhachev says he has limited time remaining in the UFC as he prepares to defend his welterweight title against Ireland’s Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 in Philadelphia. At 34, the Russian wants to compete every three or four months and a victory would extend his winning streak to 17, setting a new UFC record and strengthening his case among the sport’s greatest fighters.

Makhachev has won 17 of 18 UFC bouts since debuting in 2015 and became a two-division champion after defeating Jack Della Maddalena last year. Machado Garry, 28, has won 10 of 11 UFC fights; victory would make him Ireland’s first UFC champion since Conor McGregor and give him the most UFC wins by an Irish fighter.
