I Played the Game Recommended by the Weeknd, and It Could Be 2026’s Sleeper Hit

Polygon · 3 hours ago

The musician known as The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) has publicly recommended About Fishing, a PSX-style horror indie game, in an interview with The Washington Post, prompting Polygon's writer to try it and declare it a potential sleeper hit for 2026. The game blends fishing simulation with a murder mystery, and Tesfaye's endorsement adds to a string of high-profile game-industry engagements he has pursued through his gaming-focused Instagram account.

In About Fishing, players start as a young girl learning to fish from her father before a jump forward in time reveals he has been imprisoned for murder, leaving the player to investigate as an adult while catching fish, selling them for gear, and uncovering clues around a small village. Tesfaye compared its atmosphere to burned Dreamcast discs he played as a child, such as Shenmue and Seaman, and reportedly spent five hours meeting developer studio The Water Museum. He has also recently visited Atlus and met designers including Suda51 and Hidetaka Miyazaki; About Fishing is due for release on Steam later in 2026, with a demo currently available.
