Burnley Women's manager Jackie Bachteler will take charge of her first home match on Sunday, nine months after nearly dying from sepsis. The American joined the club in December to coach the women's first team and men's academy, but three weeks later was rushed to A&E after collapsing at the training ground, and spent time in intensive care fighting for her life.

Doctors treated Bachteler with oxygen, fluids and antibiotics as her blood pressure plummeted and she lost the ability to walk; she spent days in hospital alone, as family in the US and her wife in Finland were unable to reach her. She has since had to relearn how to walk and still experiences post-sepsis symptoms such as dizziness and fatigue, recently becoming unwell during a pre-season match. Bachteler returned to Burnley in July as manager and credits the club's medical staff with saving her life, sharing her story to coincide with World Sepsis Day ahead of Burnley's WSL2 match against Sunderland.
