I visited Whirlow Hall Farm which has just launched a ‘transformative outdoor classroom’ learning space
Whirlow Hall Farm Trust has unveiled a new outdoor classroom facility designed to serve as a nature-based learning environment for Sheffield children. The structure, which features a wooden construction and an ecological roof supporting wildlife, launched with a formal ceremony on 24 June 2026. The facility aims to provide educational experiences that connect young people directly with nature, with particular benefit for those facing challenges such as health issues, learning disabilities, or trauma.
The project resulted from collaboration between multiple funding partners, with B. Braun serving as the leading corporate supporter after a decade-long relationship with the Trust. Additional substantial contributions came from donors Graham and Susan Royle and GRI Group. The outdoor classroom represents the latest chapter in the farm's longstanding mission to provide educational and residential opportunities for inner-city Sheffield children, building on its historical role as a destination for school visits and residential programmes.
