Joe Satriani says he remains a devoted admirer of Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson, despite a dramatic experience playing on the same Malaysian festival bill that reportedly ended with police escorting him offstage. He places the band among the progressive-rock artists who most impressed him, alongside early Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and King Crimson.

Satriani first saw Jethro Tull at New York’s Westbury Music Fair while they were touring their 1970 album Benefit, and recalls Anderson as an unusually exotic and compelling performer. He praises the group’s distinctive musicianship, odd time signatures and use of instruments including flute and mandolin, as well as Martin Barre’s rock guitar playing. His particular favourite is Stand Up, which he describes as a brilliant jazz-rock fusion engineered by Andy Johns.
