U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer against Jose Antonio Caballero-Nolasco, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, after he was charged in connection with a wrong-way crash in Maryland that killed a mother and her daughter. The request asks Montgomery County authorities not to release him from custody once his criminal case concludes, reflecting the Trump administration's broader push to detain undocumented migrants accused of serious crimes pending deportation proceedings.

Caballero-Nolasco is accused of driving drunk the wrong way on Interstate 270 on 29 August and crashing head-on into another vehicle, killing Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, and her 23-year-old daughter Areebah Jahin, who were travelling home to Northern Virginia. Two other occupants, a 62-year-old man and an eight-year-old girl, survived and were hospitalised. He faces charges including grossly negligent manslaughter and homicide by motor vehicle while impaired, with officers reporting he smelled of alcohol and showed no signs of braking before the crash; empty beer bottles were reportedly found in his vehicle. He is currently held at Montgomery County Detention Center after receiving hospital treatment.
