An ICE officer charged over a shooting in Minneapolis has been released from custody in Texas after a federal judge declined Minnesota’s request to block his release. The case matters because Minnesota is seeking to extradite Christian Castro to face criminal charges, while officials say they fear he could leave for Mexico before Texas completes the process.

Castro was released at 6:59am on Thursday, according to the Cameron County sheriff. Minnesota charged him in May with four counts of second-degree assault and one count of falsely reporting a crime, alleging he fired at a house, injuring Julio Sosa-Celis and lodging a bullet in a child’s bedroom wall. The judge found Minnesota had not met the legal requirements for a temporary restraining order; under the relevant extradition law, Castro could only be held on the Minnesota warrant until 27 August 2026.
